András Gál has been working in monochrome painting since the mid-1990s and has participated in several major international exhibitions, including the Mies van der Rohe Haus in Berlin, Hunter College in New York, and the Venice Biennale. He completed his studies at the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts’ painting department between 1987 and 1991. His masters were: Lajos Sváby, Károly Klimó and Zoltán Tölg-Molnár. In 1992, he received the Barcsay prize. In 1996, he received a scholarship from the Hungarian Academy in Rome. In 1997, he became a fine arts scholarship recipient of the city of Vienna, and in the same year, he won the third prize in the Hungarian Asphalt Award. Between 1997 and 1999, he received a Derkovits scholarship; in 2001, he received a Hungarian State Eötvös Scholarship. In 2008, he participated in an artist exchange program with the support of the Kunststiftung Baden-Württemberg. In 2021, he received the Mihály Munkácsy Award.
“In Hungarian monochrome painting, András Gál came closest to radical painting, and on the domestic scene he most consistently strives to participate directly in the international monochrome discourse.”
