Theater of war

How should we think about war and its representations? Emeric Lhuisset has been working on these issues for more than 20 years, questioning in the Theater of War series the staging and theatricalization of conflict alongside a Kurdish guerrilla group from 2010 to 2012 or attempting to show a future war in southern Iraq in 2016 with the Last Water War project. In 2016–2017, faced with the total absence of images during the uprising in several Kurdish cities in Turkey, he realized that a conflict not captured in images does not exist in the eye of the world and decided to restore its iconography. At the same time, he tries to circumvent the censorship process of the Turkish government to talk about the rewriting of history and erasure in this territory. Since 2014, Emeric Lhuisset has carried out several projects in Ukraine. First, in a work of propaganda deconstruction by giving the protagonists a direct voice, thereby allowing them to reclaim their own history. Then, more recently, drawing a parallel between past and present history, he raises the question of colonialism in the Ukrainian conflict, placing at the center the importance of both culture and historical narratives in this confrontation. Because let us not forget that culture is also a weapon in the vast theater of war.
