Timeless journey
From the beginning, Jean-François Lepage’s (b. 1960) photography has been characterized by the desire to extend the photographic moment. Experimentation as a physical necessity of personal and singular appropriation of the photographic medium is what gives Lepage’s body of work a timeless sensation. The artistic proposal of our stand for Paris Photo 2023 is a crossed look at twenty-seven pieces of works by Lepage. From his black and white silver gelatin prints of the 1980s, through his hand-painted 8×10-inch Polaroids to his most recent project entitled Genèse — a personal work of multiple forms and atypical beauty represented here by two opuses, Opium and Zombie. Started in 2014 Lepage use as material, films and prints from his archives to create new works. Inert matter to which he gives life throughout this ultimate project — from light to shadow, from shadow to light.
